Bakersfield, Calif. – Winning the NHRA Heritage Series March Meet is an accomplishment for any racing family. However, when a father and son can accomplish this task in a 22-year span it becomes special.
Second generation Funny Car driver Will Martin drove his Multistack Pro-long Alcohol Funny Car to the 7.0 Pro class championship during the 52nd running of the NHRA Heritage Series March Meet contested at Auto Club Famoso Raceway. Martin’s victory occurred 22-years after his father, former NHRA Nitro Funny Car racer John A. Martin took home the 1988 March Meet title in his Nitro Funny Car. For the 29-year old driver and defending NHRA Heritage 7.0 Pro series Champion, winning the same race his father won more than two decades ago holds a special place in his heart.
“Winning any race is always the result of solid team work, and today’s victory at the March Meet is no exception,” noted the second-generation driver from San Dimas, Calif. “But, not too many people can say they’ve won the same race as their father. When dad won in 1988 it was the last time NHRA Nitro Funny Cars raced at the March Meet, so the victory was a very special one for all of us. I am simply honored to hold the trophy today and say I’ve done something as cool as my dad.”

Martin’s march to ‘The Meet’ title in the very competitive 7.0 Pro category, a 7.00-second index pro comp style class which competes in the NHRA Heritage Series, began with a number one qualifying position. Martin’s 7.009 second elapsed time was good enough for the pole position and received the Kern County Low E.T. award for his effort. Martin then mowed through the 16-car field in the ‘Jam-Air Special’ Multistack Pro-long Alcohol Funny Car with consistent reaction times and elapsed times close to the 7.00 second standard.
The final round paired Martin against Mark Vaught from Crawfordsville, Indiana and his very quick and consistent sling-shot front motored dragster. At the flash of the green, the second generation Martin grabbed a huge starting line advantage and recorded his best elapsed time of the weekend, a solid 7.008 second ET which was good enough to hold off Vaught’s 7.045 second effort.

The guys did a fantastic job coming back from smoking the tires on the first run to giving me a car that went right down Broadway every run after.
